New E-Waste Recycling Law in the State of Illinois

Effective January 1, 2012 a new law in the state of Illinois will effectively ban several types of electronics that are currently dropped off at a landfill. The law establishes a statewide system for recycling and/or reusing computers, monitors, televisions and printers discarded from residences by requiring electronic manufacturers to participate in the management of discarded and unwanted electronic products. 

The following list of electronics will be banned from landfills beginning January 1, 2012:

• Televisions
• Monitors
• Printers
• Computers (including tablet computers)
• Electronic keyboards
• Facsimile machines
• Videocassette recorders
• Portable digital music players
• Digital video disc players
• Video game consoles
• Small scale servers
• Scanners
• Electronic mice
• Digital converter boxes
• Cable receivers
• Satellite receivers
• Digital video disc recorders
